If the latter is it possible that you selected the seats, but so did the other person paying for them, and they finished up the OLCI before you did? I'm not sure how synchronous AC's seat selection is but if you and I are both looking at the seat map, and you selected a seat, does it instantly become unavailable to me to select (I'd be surprised if that's the case). Assuming it doesn't, does the first person to conclude OLCI get the seat? (That would make sense.)
I selected the seats back in Nov 2023 when I made the booking. The seats were confirmed by email, and showed in the app as all three of us in the desired same row.
It was only upon check-in that I got notification that my seat had been changed. And when I tried I could not get my previously reserved seat back, even though in the app under flight details it was still showing all three of us in the same, originally selected seats.
I get your point about simultaneous seat selection during OLCI, but I do not believe that to be the case here, as I had selected the seats 6 months ago.
