The upside of buying direct through Renfe is getting to add extras (seat selection, meals on higher ticket classes) which IB won't allow you to. But if none of that is important then imo it doesn't matter, and I would rather have the delay protection.

That said, does EU261 apply if the train service is the one that is delayed or cancelled and you're more than 3 hours late?
