For the two of us the route will be London-Singapore-Sydney (end of February) and Singapore-London (end of March). I will have one 241 and two upgrade vouchers. At present I have 160K+ Avios.

At the moment - considering the difficulty in a) getting a London-Sydney or London- Singapore 241 in February and b) telephoning to get the return added on – I would aim to use the two upgrade vouchers to book London – Singapore and then use the 241 to book Singapore-London. I would then hope to get a BA Avios flight Singapore-Sydney.

CW throughout, little flexibility on dates, stopover in Singapore will be fine.

My calculations (using eg £350/160K Avios for the Singapore-Sydney leg) produce from this a total payment of £1535/370K Avios.

Now I know this is a poor use of a 241, but by the time we fly we’ll both be over 75 and not expecting to do much further long-haul travel, plus I find it quite stressful these days sitting up ‘till midnight to grab flights! My thinking is that this is the easiest way to go. I’ll probably not be renewing my Amex Premium Plus next year, but we’ll continue to get Barclays upgrade vouchers.

Any comments or ideas will be much appreciated.
I would honestly save this complexity and book Qatar for 90k return per person in business. The experience will be vastly superior and you will also arrive at a much more pleasant time (evening) so that you can head straight to bed and get a head start on jet lag management; instead of trying to get an early check in and wandering around bleary-eyed.

I should add that I’ve been back and forth to Australia a fair few times (not by the standards of flyertalk of course) and my recent experience flying QR EDI-DOH-MEL was by far the smoothest and most enjoyable. Arriving early in the morning to Sydney is much more unpleasant and so is flying BA, especially when you have to put up with their unreliable product over that distance.
