My personal rule of any big event is to walk as far as I can before trying any transport!
Having been a season ticket holder, I’ve done this numerous times and never had any real problems from Northumberland P back to Liv St. You often have to queue to get to the platforms but it’s a moving queue and I walk to the far end of the platform at the point of the amount of carriages. Theres trains every 10 mins or less and the whole process from entering the station to getting a train might take 20mins. It’s worth judging the time you want to leave the stadium, the later you leave the ground the less busy stations will be.
But I was going to add to my post that a big factor is train strikes, engineering works, etc etc. Train companies seem to have a knack of not running on big event days! Not always but it does crop up. Thats the only time when I have used overground trains and resorted to the dreadful rickety Victoria Line or a bus.
