You can have a bunch of suica/pasmo/icoca cards on your device, so there is no need to reload. The issue is that retailers IME aren't set up to allow you to spread a payment across multiple such payments. As mentioned the best I could do was to put 20000yen on suica and pay the remainder via credit card.
