Priority baggage is encoded in the barcode of the luggage tag. A message is sent to the check in system specifically for priority baggage (as opposed to a free text message). You will notice the text on the baggage tag specifically say ‘J’.

Can confirm our company makes its bookings solely via the portal, since we haven't appointed any external travel agencies yet.
We had also noticed that the bag tags shows 'J' as opposed to other economy / PY fare classes, but it made no difference w.r.t. priority handling.
No point if ground staff are unwilling to stick that blue CX business priority luggage tag onto the bag, and baggage handlers aren't well paid enough to decipher that code letter.
CX need to implement a system where ground staff are explicitly alerted to treat the bag as priority by splashing that blue tag onto it!
From memory (of the coworkers) the tag also doesn't seem to show 'J' if the pax upgraded from Y to PY via Asia Miles.
