First time what? Missing a connection??

If you'll indulge a story...

My last major IRROPS with Delta involved an attempt to fly MSP-DTW-LEX. We departed the first segment into the teeth of a winter storm hitting DTW, and ended up diverting to ORD when DTW was closed. With the typical rolling diversion delay (at first we were allegedly continuing on to DTW that night), I was scrambling to find my own recovery. I talked the GA operating the last ORD-MSP of the night to let me on the flight, but in doing so he voided all of the coupons on my ticket, including the return which included a confirmed RUC upgrade. Although I successfully got back home that night, I spent over five hours on the phone trying to get my ticket fixed, including being rebooked MSP-CVG in the morning.

However, whatever they did to reconstruct my ticket never got new coupons attached, and so I was unable to check in. I spent an hour at the airport in the morning, tying up an MSP counter agent, her supervisor, the supervisor's supervisor, and an internal hold to GTS, which wasn't resolved until after my flight departed. I was finally reissued a proper ticket (coupons attached) for the evening MSP-CVG and listed standby for the noon flight (which I didn't make). I finally arrived in CVG instead of LEX about 22 hours after my original schedule, and my destination in Kentucky about 24 hours late. (If I had not abandoned the divert, I ultimately would have overnighted in ORD and made it to LEX about 20 hours behind.)

I never got my confirmed upgrade from the return back.

That is one of the more colorful IRROPS stories that has happened to me, but it was all in a day of flying. I was very disappointed in the fact that nobody at the airport was able to fix my ticket, but other than that it's just trying to get somewhere when schedules go sideways. It was partly my fault for ditching a flight in the middle of a diversion, which was admittedly a bold ask from me, but I wanted to sleep in my own bed.

You can certainly note that you are disappointed that a maintenance delay caused you to misconnect and arrive late, but this happens to dozens if not hundreds of passengers every day.
