...On topic though, honestly that's what I've done. I have a refundable ticket for a flight that leaves the same time, will go through to the gate with them, and leave as anyone would if they didn't get on their flight. I can't imagine immigration would have issue, aside from the long line I might have.

If no baggage checked on that refundable flight, it's not a big deal. Worse case if I am getting late for the original flight I have to catch at the other Terminal, I'll shift it to the one that leaves +3 hrs after.
