“Trip” means a journey outside Your Country of Residence which must commence and end in Your Country of Residence, or a journey within Your Country of Residence which must include a flight, or at least one night of pre-booked accommodation away from home. Trip is extended to include any journey within Your Country of Residence for Car Rental Benefits (Section 1.5) only. Trips must not exceed 90 consecutive days with a maximum 240 days during each 12 month period. The Trip length will be extended to 365 consecutive days for Your Children under the age of 25 on a Gap Year

So It looks like Ex-EU trips for UK residents might not be covered.
I would still argue that your trip started in the UK if you do an Ex-EU as a UK resident as your trip to that EU country may very well be part of your trip. Whether it is on a single ticket or not should not make a difference (but I do acknowledge that the wording is ambiguous in that regard). I would assume that the limitation shall be read in conjunction with the maximum 90 consecutive days, i.e. that it is a maximum of 90 days from leaving the UK, so if you had a weekend in Oslo before starting a 89 day trip, you would not be covered as your total trip would exceed 90 days (despite the Ex-EU ticket only being 89 days). Alternatively, you could just book itineraries of less than 90 days each (which are not departing the UK) and claim to be covered for a much longer period than the 90 days (e.g. by booking one-way tickets for an around the world-trip and claim that each of them constitutes a trip of less than 90 days).

Maybe someone has spoken to Amex about this before embarking on an Ex-EU?
