RE Globetrotter949's story, it seems egregious that UA staff were unable to do anything at all could be done for passengers until the "diverted" SFO flight landed at SJC. The "diversion" was surely completely under UA's direction and UA should have been able to re-accommodate badly affected passengers at the origin. In February, I booked a BNA-SFO-INTL with a 1:40 connection before finding out about the closed runway. I tracked the BNA-SFO flight (UAL483, arriving 9:30pm with small day-to-day variations) over time and, for comparison, also tracked UAL1769 RDU-SFO flight landing at the same time. The BNA flight was late 80% of the time, anywhere from 30 minutes to > 2 hours, always with a delayed departure from BNA. The RDU flight was 80% on time. Clearly, UA Operations had picked the BNA segment as a loser. [In the end, if I hadn't changed the BNA-SFO flight to an earlier connection at DEN, I would have missed the INTL connection at SFO.]
