Emails use a protocol, SMTP, which is 44 years old. My email address is based on the PDP-11 format (nnnnnn.nnnn - though on DECs it would have been a comma) and is still in daily use with over 40 years of continuous service.
If you are USA based, the Google voice is the easiest alternative to Skype. Viber is the next biggest player on the market.
