My partner and I came to the same conclusion. We spoke with a couple people who seemed totally content just knowing they were spending an arm and a leg to be at an Aman. This was our third property (Jiwo in '19 and Gani in '21), and both of those - especially Jiwo, which remains one of my favorite resorts ever - were just completely different experiences. We're going to Zoe in September this year and Tokyo in November; we're hopeful those don't leave us with the same bitter taste in our mouths that NY did.
To echo others farther above, the transition to lifestyle brand, club membership, yacht/private jet is a disappointing but perhaps not surprising maneuver. I am much later to the brand than many others here, having only visited my first property in 2019, but even in that short time there's a palpable shift in how stakeholders are approaching the brand's evolution. And I think perhaps it may be helpful to put into perspective that the "Amanjunkie" of old may no longer be their most profitable segment; they're shifting focus to the social media hyper-aware (some are influencers, some just act like them/pay a lot of attention to them) and the nouveau riche who are more likely to do free marketing for the brand. It feels a bit like a McKinsey-concocted nightmare: "how about instead of focusing on serving a discerning luxury traveler with a higher WTP with the best service the industry has to offer, you simply offer hyper-exclusive memberships with $200k initiation fees; once you have 100 of those people, you've more profitable than ever and it's free, extremely utile marketing when they post their espresso martini from the terrace."
There are a couple TAs I follow closely, who I've also spotted here, who seem to genuinely love Aman NY. Interested to know how the clients of TAs like that have been treated, or if any here would dissuade their clients from visiting that property...
