Indeed. The normal reaction when somebody recommends Skype on here is "But, I don't have Skype, and I've no intention of installing it".
It's always worked perfectly for me whenever I've been in a place outside my normal roaming area (which means virtually everywhere these days - thanks Brexit!).
I probably load £10 onto my account every 5 years or so
