I understand that using an Opal card, the max fare payable per day is A$5 or so; does this also apply if a journey commences at SYD Airport Metro?
The airport T1 and T2-T3 train stations have a hefty
"station access fee" $16.68
. [the system is not referred to as the metro: just Sydney trains]

Opal is the smartcard ticketing system used on trains, buses, ferries and light rail. You can use an Opal card or tap on directly with an Amex, Mastercard or Visa Card.

Station access fee
When using train stations at Sydney Domestic Airport or Sydney International Airport, a station access fee is charged in addition to the train fare. Here's what you need to know:
- The fee is automatically deducted from your Opal card or contactless payment, and it's added to the cost of an Opal Single trip ticket at time of purchase.
- The station access fee is the same for Opal cards and, contactless payments but is higher for Opal single tickets. Train fares are more economical when using an Opal card or contactless payment.
- The fee is charged by the Airport Link Company who privately-owns the airport stations.
Edit
If want to save a few dollars (~station access fee) can take the 350 bus, from T2, to Mascot or Bondi Junction and then transfer to the train.

Is also bus route 420 that goes to T1 & T2-T3 then to Mascot Station (no access fee).
