I couldn’t use the partner ref to select seats on the SQ site either (as it’s an NZ flight number despite being SQ metal so I get the “This flight is operated by our partner airline” message).
What I ended up doing was making a dummy booking on the SQ website for my SQ metal flight to see what open seats there were. I messaged them on the live chat on the website and they allocated my request straight away, and the seat number showed on my NZ app within minutes.
As for trying to pick a seat on my NZ ticketed UA flight, well that was a different story…
I am in exactly this situation and was going to call SQ, this looks a simpler option!
