That’s valid guidance not just for Europe to US via London on AA.

But the problem arises (for me) when I am trying to book awards. It is not uncommon that I can find a good business class award between international gateways, but the feeder flights on one or both ends have no award space even if
airline I am booking or a partner has flights on that route. And then, AFAIK, there is little I can do other than

- book long layover times
- watch like a hawk for schedule changes
- if possible book feeders in such a way that they can be changed or canceled at no or low cost

This thread was helpful in that I learned something new about LHR (many thanks especially to orbitmic for the detailed post). I try to avoid LHR if there are other options, but don’t always have that luxury. In fact my next trip will take me through LHR, but it’s a single ticket, with a five hour connection, so I am not worried.
