It wasn't a common sense solution, you were just very lucjy
If you want to go from Europe to USA via London on AA, just buy a ticket from Europe to the USA and the connecting flight will be included in the fare - if you are late, then the airline will rebook you
If plans change, then change the ticket
If you choose to make separate bookings, then it is up to you to ensure that you have left enough time to get to the onward flight. Given a 1 hour delay caused this issue, then I would say that there was definitely not enough time allowed
Others that were denied boarding may well have been connecting and would have just been booked onto the next flight
