DiDi works great but if you can't speak anything it'll be rough. Translation apps can help but if they try to call you and you can't speak *anything* it's going to be very difficult and you'll likely get canceled on. I found this particularly true if you try to do DiDi at busy airports or busy locations in general. Most of the time drivers were calling me and I had to hand the phone to my wife. If neither of us spoke, we would have had a much harder time.
I used LetsVPN and it worked very well. I also bought 3HK eSIMS via MobiMatter for my wife and I and those worked very well too.

The DiDi app has a message function that automatically translates to Chinese for the driver. So when I get a car, I immediately tell the driver via DiDi message not to call because my Mandarin is no good and to use the gps location. Future communication is via DiDi message if he has trouble locating me in a busy place. Has worked fine for dozens of pickups.
The esims from websites are useful if you need a lot of data as per GB, they are much cheaper than turning on your home country’s roaming
