With PlusPoints you have the option to request specific segments and should not request a segment you can not live with (miles upgrades are a different story).
PlusPoint upgrades on prime routes at peak times are a no go for 1Ks let alone Plats. What few upgrades there are are GS.
As a plat, I have 3 CPUs this year so far, 500+ routes except for IAD-MCO mid week
I am assuming the above UA statement is up to date as interestingly I have indeed canceled upgrades, I just did it. Had to be done by phone, I was told by the agent that once you "check in" you can't cancel it. I have done this three times this year. More recently when I initially got upgraded on the short run which was not long after booking I was even told since I was in this case #2 on the long run (ewr-smf) to "let it ride for awhile" but "cancel prior to check in" which is exactly what I did. Maybe just my experience and the agent didn't know the rules (wouldn't be first time). Perhaps part of the issue is I throw PP's at everything at booking and now going forward, I'll back off that and just apply them to the long run.
You've had some luck with CPUs, I actually did get ONE a EGE-DEN flight, not much of a CPU but I'll take it.
