I found PZ space on the outbound (SFO-AKL) but not on the return (MEL-SFO) so I called the 1K line and was told that 1. you can't downgrade one segment only even though the long haul flights are two weeks apart on an open-jaw itinerary (EWR-SFO-AKL, MEL-SFO-EWR), and 2. don't worry because the earlier expiring points would be taken anyway, even if the system shows them as deducted.
I don't believe either of those statements but I had no evidence to argue. Was I given bad information?
Update: I contacted MileagePlus after the trip ended and was denied a PlusPoint reinstatement. Despite a proper explanation and argument about being steered in this direction, they refused to budge. I may try again, depending on how much effort I feel like putting into this.
