On a lot of the shorter flights, they don't have time to turn on the credit card machine and actually process payments, but handing you something from the cart is no different whether it's booze or Coke.
As an aside, I didn't even know I should be expecting this from YVR - YCD? Is it even catered (do they have anything to actually offer?) Usually I find the pilots make the "30 minutes to landing" announcement before we've taken off.
