I've stayed multiple nights at both hotels but only in suites. However I have seen the regular rooms at both.
There is free breakfast, late checkout, and a lounge at Blackfriars for globallsts too. However, the lounge is a lot better at the Churchill, it's not a separated lounge at Blackfriars. The "garden view" at the Churchill isn't that spectacular in my view. If staying in a regular room, I don't see that much difference between the two hotels.
As to location, I like the Churchill's ;location better but Blackfriars is closer to the nearest tube station. And from the nearest tube station, you can get anywhere in London.
If your end of year stay includes Christmas day do anything you can to be in some other country then. The ONLY thing open are a few restaurants which charge double or triple. There is no public transit of any kind.
