In the absence of any safety related reason, I wouldn't be lowering my window shade unless I wanted to. Although imagine that may fall foul of the the requirement to follow instructions from the crew.... Never had to test that boundary but I know others have and it has mixed results (i.e. they are more firmly instructed, or are allowed to do as they please).
