So, I have been wondering about this - Yesterday I found and booked two flights from PHL --> xxx --> HND for the spouse and myself for February in F. But weirdly when i searched from PHL directly it did not show up, however when searching from EWR with the button clicked for include nearby they both appeared. One from PHL --> ORD --> HND, and one from PHL --> LAX --> HND. Both arriving within 3 hours of each other.
I had assumed this was phantom space, but it was bookable, so I snagged it. Is this a different phenomenon altogether?
This is a bit above my pay grade but I'm thinking it's more of a limitation of AA's search function (agreeing with JJeffery.)It simply just doesn't show all the availible options (it even varies from desktop to app).
Had it been phantom space, it would have shown PHL-xxx-HND but then errored out when you tried to complete the booking.
A good way to be sure of JL availability and avoid the frustrating process of phantom space is look for the direct flights to the US and then work backward and try to tack on the AA connection. If that makes sense.
