They’ve shipped in some more sand since I was last there, but for kids I’d probably go with beach shoes in any case. My hint for a family who wants beach time would be to go to have an afternoon at Cape Away Beach bar on Ban Tai beach. A much nicer setting 15-25min down the road, but with no chain hotels around.

From what I remember of the beach villa you got sun reasonably well into the afternoon.
