He seems to have melted some/most of the gold, probably into stuff that is in demand in the Indian community, where there is high demand, for weddings etc. Might have sold some here and some in India. Unlikely to have shipped in very large amounts. But gold being heavy, does not take that much space.
To me it looks like he was the right person at the right place and the right time, and he grabbed the opportunity. Seemed better than continuing as an AC employee?
Will regard to gold being heavy, I think you mean dense. $20 million in gold at today's spot price is roughly 522 lbs so really not that difficult to move and transport.
