More seriously, approach the gate before boarding starts. Show them SSSS on your boarding pass. You’ll be invited through and have your bags searched, and can then sit in the holding area. Thankfully this form of pre boarding doesn’t cause as much harrumphing as checking in cabin bags on short haul does.
