We are flying IAD-ZRH-LJU with a 40 minute connection (arriving in e-plus on UA). Ordinarily I like to check bags on a connecting flight rather than deal with carryon in two airports and two planes but I am wondering if it makes sense to carry on given the short connection (or if chances are either we make the connection and our bags do too, or we both miss it). Think this is the only nonstop flight of the day but we arrive in the morning and there are some possible connecting flights.

Your bags may or may not make it. It really depends on many factors. I had bags making a 15-minute connection and had bags missing with a 2-hour connection. In my experience, they don't reroute bags via another airport and usually put them on the next available nonstop flight, even if it is the next day. It minimizes chances of even further loss.
