Whilst I am not sure why you are “shocked” (blame US homeland Security for that) there is nothing you need to me worried about. Unsure what cabin you are travelling in but all it is, there will be pre boarding announcements made for you and many others at T5 prior to your LAX flight to invite you for additional hand baggage screening and if you arrive late at the gate you still be handed over to non airline staff to do the same

nothing to stress a about at all
