This language exists in case you wanted to use something like the United Infinite Club card to purchase your United airfare and get free checked bags and put the rest of the trip on the CSR. Even if you distribute the costs across multiple cards only the card with the largest benefit can be used.
Yes, this is true. The Amex Platinum trip cancellation/interruption insurance also requires round-trip common carrier travel to be purchased in full alongside any other travel expenses. If you don't don't pay in full, and it doesn't include round-trip common carrier travel, the coverage will not apply.
So bsaically, any family trips over $20,000 need additional 3rd party insurance to be bought as Chase / AMEX would only limit to $20 coverage no matter how you slice and dice it.
