Yes it does count on carriers such as CX, but check what class your getting on the other carrier, as not all CX classes give you AA milage credit. (That is how my challange happened was on CX PEK-HKG-LAX in J class). The other requirement is that in order to keep your status you need to fly 4 segments on AA within the year.
