I think you are giving AC and their IT systems wayyyyy more credit than they deserve. I've never had an issue short-checking bags, and you should have no issues now or in the future....there are like 97 legit reasons to short-check bags, especially if you have an 8 hr layover.
I think my "record" was SFO-YOW, when flights were stupidly full, so I booked SFO-YUL-YYZ-YOW, with a checked bag.
I wanted to drop the bag with my dad in YYZ, and I wanted to SDC below MCT (this was during COVID when MCT was stupidly high).
So I short-checked to YUL (no issue), picked it up, went to check-in, SDC'd, and short-checked it again (no issue), to YYZ. Then I grabbed it in YYZ, went outside, gave it to my dad, and went back in to fly to YOW.
If you check it all the way through, there's risk. But if you tell them to short-check it, they will.
