Yes, they expire if not used. There is a small grace period - e.g. the January batch expires on July 15.
which means that for a 10ish day period in January or July you'll have $50 from the benefit that can be used on a ticket. If you use that for a ticket slightly above $50 and then cancel > 24 hours later you have a flight credit that is valid for another year.
