Yeah, I'm in that boat too, I prefer those seats, but I think they had a lot of problems mechanically if I recall. CX used to have them, and for some reason thought JL did too.
JAL has the fixed back seats in PY.
I think the main complaint was the fixed back seats in Y for Cathay. The problem in Y is really that you don't have space to slide forward. ANA has the fixed back seats in Y as well, and as long as you are in the rows by the exit doors with unlimited legroom, they are fine, but if you have a row in front of you, unless you are very short they get uncomfortable when "reclining". Basically most modern business class seat reclines the same way, sliding forward, there is just space to stretch out in, so it works.
