I agree with Nivsy.. it's amazing that airport transport facilities close at midnight when there are scheduled flights arriving later... it's not as if QF 72 is a recent schedule addition! I'll be HBO so hopefully will be able to get through quickly.
It comes down to whether it is wothwhile for the rental agency - if that is the only flight at that time and there are few people that want to hire , then not worth paying for staff to be present until , say, 2am to 2:30 am
