This happened to me recently; I bought an A-fare to Japan 4 months out because I needed to be on a specific flight with my client and that's all that was available. It was expensive @ 3.5K and I was not happy. Just a week ago, UA opened R and I down fared, saving $900-. Still waitlisted though-I won't be happy if I have to fly in P+. (I'm a contractor and always have to fly on my own dime. The client doesn't reimburse me, my expenses come out of my end of the contract and, hopefully, I've bid enough of a pad into the contract to cover my expenses).
