Remember that AA's liability for lost baggage maxes out at $3,800. If the value of your suitcase and its contents exceeds $3,800, you're going to be somewhat out of pocket anyway.
If you are not satisfied with how AA resolves your claim, you are free to file a complaint with the DOT.
