The bigger problem is that when hotels restrict standard award nights to a very specific type of room, they also block us from using our SUA for standard suites that are available. Other than system programming/rules, there is no reason why Hyatt cannot allow booking straight into standard suite award inventory using a SUA.
In my case, the hotel is currently selling two of the three sub-categories of its base room. However, the hotel made only 1 subcategory of the base room available on points. Those rooms were quickly taken and I am no longer able to cancel my SUA and go back to the base room. I'm sure there will be many base rooms empty when I check in.
It’s really strange because I actually read in another group somewhere that people will book a base room, apply the suite award then literally 10 minutes before they go to check in they’ll call and remove the Suite Award to guarantee they’ll get a complimentary suite and save the suite award.
I personally think doing this is ethical and would violate some abuse clause in the T&C.
But what I’m saying is that process wouldn’t work if in some way the base room wasn’t saved for them. Multiple people claim to do it too and have for a long time.
