Advise for a positive outcome here.

1) document everything.
2) Be nice to the people one the phone, I can assure you that if you escalate this, they will have to write a report about it. The last thing you need is for them to be able to say that you were rude and condescending.
3) book the ticket so at least you have a seat. You can always change the fare class later.
4) did I say "be nice"
