In contrast, the seat next to it (3G) has a standard ottoman with adjacent closet and shoe storage. I couldn't understand why they would be so different, but upon reviewing the seat map on Aerolopa again, I think I found the answer. First, here are views of 3D and 3G. You can see the difference:
Now here's the seat map from Aerolopa:
Based on the shape of the walls in front of 3D, it looks like the bed/ottoman is shorter than for other seats. I think JAL made the ottoman wider to provide more comfort and compensate for the shorter bed. So if you are tall, you may want to avoid this seat. If you are short and want a wider ottoman (and don't mind having less storage), then choose this seat.
Not sure if my theory is correct, though. Would be interesting to hear from someone who has had experience with this seat.
I noticed this as well and agree with your theory. I’m a tall guy with big feet. I’ve been trying to figure out which seat in J to book. My son and I are booked on a flight from DFW next April. He doesn’t care if we sit next to each other since he likes the window. I’ve been trying to decide which seats are best. Row 3 was blocked for him, but as AA EP, I could pick Row 3, so I spent a lot of time scrutinizing it trying to figure out if Row 3 had some benefit that meant I should pick it. All things equal, I prefer a window, but could go with a middle seat across from him if it mean it was more comfortable. I was also trying to figure out whether 8K had a slightly deeper footwell. There’s so little information to go on. The good news is that the seat selection is still wide open. Hoping future F availability opens up and I can move there. Originally, I wanted to put myself in F, but the F award seat was gone by the time I finished booking his J seat.
