I'm assuming this trick still works IF you book using one party's miles for another party. If one books flights for oneself using their own miles, I think the AS number used is hard coded to the flyer (which may or may not be overridable by service reps).
I'm nore concerned about the reverse being true (e.g. redeem AA miles for an AA flight and not being allowed to entet AS elite FF #). And what is to stop someone from just creating a companion profile in the same name and leaving the FF blank and asking the operating carrier to add it later?
