Mhm- maybe an EU thing. I've used WeChat pay linked to an Australian Amex both here in Australia, as well as in mainland China, Hong Kong, Thailand and New Zealand. Zero problems anywhere, just once or twice I had to change the payment card to my (also Australian) VISA. All really small amounts, takeaway foods and the likes.
