A330 were definitely on its way out in the early 2010s... then delivery schedule slipped, early teething problems, etc. It was wise to keep the 767 and the A330 flying.
The first few new ones were also from the batch that SQ dumped a while back and were used by TP for a couple of years to cover their 330neo delays.
