They are not required to. A kind Ticket Agent may help you out there, but it is a roll of the dice. If you go with your plan, make sure you understand worst case scenario and be prepared for it both in terms of the delay in getting to your destination along with possible financial impacts.

Hopefully everything goes smoothly for you and I'm not saying you shouldn't try this, but be aware of the risks/costs involved.
