Correct, it is not possible to connect separate PNRs, that was misinformation you received upthread.

The refusal to through-check bags on separate tix is an AA "feature." Prior to late 2016, they would do it, but then One World changes its policies to allow member carriers to refuse through-check, and AA changed its rules to force you to collect and re-check. This is the policy:
We only through check bags if all your tickets are in the same record locator and you are connecting to another American Airlines or oneworldŽ flight.

Most *A carriers, including UA, will still check bags through to their alliance partners across separate tickets.
