I just spent a couple of nights at the Leela Palace Bangalore. It's a spectacular place - mind-boggling that something like that could have been built this century. Service was generally good (a waiter at the Indian restaurant in particular was phenomenal), but I had an incident where they sent a car to pick me up (which they wanted to charge $250 for) despite me not booking one and emailing them once before arrival to confirm that I didn't want one (we took an Uber for $10). They were then a bit weird at the hotel, with an Operations Manager insisting that I thought the car should have been free - and cutting me off whenever I tried to correct him.
I booked on my GHA Discovery rate and got a one category upgrade (it should have been two) to a Club Room which apparently didn't include access to the Club itself except it was then given by the Ops Manager to compensate for me thinking that the car should have been free. We joined the Club for afternoon tea one day which was high quality tea and a choice of English-style afternoon tea sandwiches. Slightly surreal, but fun.
It's a fair trek from the airport (Nearly 90min in rush-hour, ~50min early mornings for the BA flight to London), but I hope to be able to return and enjoy it again at some point. It has many of the attributes of a true luxury hotel as recognised by the Luxury FT forum, but you see on the edges and in some of the service it's not quite there (and to be fair is quite reasonably priced).
