$2106 for May travel, even more for positioning -- still worth it to get to GGL?
I did a lot of flying during the last year and was on track to exceed 2500 BA Tier Points by July 8, which has been the end of my earnings year. Then I realized I could get to 3500 TPs if I broke up a June Europe-Asia trip into two round-trips, ARN-AUH on RJ and AUH-CGK on Srilankan. But getting to 5000 for GGL did not seem realistic until I saw this thread. Unfortunately by the time I saw it -- only a few days after people were reporting $1500 deals for flights within the next few weeks -- the lowest fare I could find in May was $2106 for HNL-LAX-JFK-GEO RT (840 TPS). (Starting from OGG instead of HNL produced the same results. A $1960 fare was available with HNL-LAX-MIA-GEO on the outbound, but this would have meant sacrificing 100 TPs.) Then I looked at positioning from LFT to HNL, and those flights are even more expensive. I could have flown MSY-SEA-HNL RT (560 TPs) on Alaska for about $2000, but a 7 a.m. departure from an airport 120 miles from home did not appeal to me. So I bit the bullet and booked LFT-CLT-LAX-HNL RT (640 TPs) on AA for $2443. Ordinarily 1480 TPs would not be worth anywhere near $4500 to me, but BAEC's transition to a fixed April-to-March earning year means that any TPs I earn between April 1 and July 8 will count both for this year and for next year. So essentially I get almost 3000 TPs over the two earnings years: 1480 to put me over the top for GGL through March 2025, and then another 1480 which, along with my June business trip to Europe and Asia, will put me very near the 3000 TPs I need to retain GGL until March 2026. I know there would have been less expensive ways to do this -- for instance, three extra AUH-CMB-CGK round trips would have earned 1680 TPs for a cost of about $3100, and 6 LGA-XXX-XXX-RDU round trips would also have cost about $3000 -- but these itineraries would have been even more inconvenient and time-consuming than flying to Honolulu and then to Guyana and then back again. Besides, I'll get to spend four days in Waikiki and two days in Guyana, mostly using free hotel nights. Many thanks to the OP and others on this thread for showing the way.
