While I'm not Dovster, just chiming in here to say you may want to check out the Travel Security forum. There's a long thread there with a list of airports where TSA basically requires everyone, no matter how thin-soled the shoe, to remove their shoes. So far, I've been lucky everywhere I've been when slipping into flip-flops at the checkpoint, but I also fly through JFK instead of EWR, which appears to be the worst by far.
