For going to CDG using the RER, you might prefer to stay next to Gare du Nord. Nevertheless, Gare de l'Est is also very close and even with big luggage, it is much less of a problem than it used to be. There are new escalators on rue d'Alsace to get you up to the same level as Gare du Nord. Otherwise, you just need to walk up the (gentle) incline of rue du Faubourg Saint Denis to get to the same place. It's only a couple of blocks.
I agree. I stayed near Gare du Nord last time. Within the train stations is not big deal to have a big luggage if there are scalators. Actually I found more uncomfortable to walk 6 blocks with my big luggage to the hotel when I arrived 6 years ago to Munich and chose a bit far hotel.
Paris metro stations is a different story. Many of them don't have scalators.
