You need to be careful now even with fully flexible fares. I've noticed since Covid even the odd full 'C' fare has been non-refundable on day-of-departure. I would carefully check the fare rules before purchasing. Provided that a full refund is permitted, you normally have until the flight closes for check-in (usually 60 minutes for Air NZ) to cancel. Once it closes, you'll potentially be hit with no-show penalties.
